Genetically Modified Franken flies – should we be worried?

Genetically modified insects? Is this for real?

Well, apparently so. In their latest newsletter, the Soil Association mentions that genetically modified olive flies could soon be let loose to kill off wild pests that damage crops - a 'safer' alternative to using pesticides. Apart from the effects these flies may have on the environment and the risks of their entering the food chain, is this another step on the road to producing GM organisms to 'help' us in maintaining intensive food production?

You can read more in the Daily Mail article at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2410484/Scientists-launch-thousands-GM-insects-fields-alternative-chemicals.html.
So why am I quoting this? Well, it is GM Health Risk Week after all. (See http://www.gmhealthriskweek.org/
